I didn’t know the humans would come back and want it, okay? They didn’t return for weeks! What was I supposed to think? All I saw was a little black thing just sitting… sitting… sitting in the tree. And Fernpaw dared me. What was I supposed to do, leave it alone? It looked hard and crunchy. Like a beetle. Okay, sue me, I wanted to eat it. Yes, now I know it’s not edible. But I didn’t know then. Aren’t you proud I climbed up so high and got it? And I discovered a bird’s nest right next to it that we didn’t know about, too. So really I did us all a favor! I mean, how was I supposed to know the humans would come back? How was I supposed to know they’d be looking for their weird black boxes? Did YOU know? See! Anyways, you can’t just blame me, EVERYONE’S been doing it! I swear I even saw Longstar making faces at it the other day, trying to scare it… okay… OKAY, it was Flameheart, not Longstar, FINE. But my point remains! We were all doing it! So why am I the only one getting in trouble??? I even dropped a rock on it once I realized it wasn’t edible, so really, you should be thanking me!!! [attr="class","twfptsmtxt"]From: <reports@straycatsociety.org> To: <birdsbeetles_jessica@biolabs.edu> Cc: <paloma@straycatsociety.org> <kristi@straycatsociety.org> Date: Monday July 5th, 2021 Dear Jessica, Thanks for your email. We’ve checked out the footage you sent and you’re absolutely right, it looks like there’s a huge group of strays in the area. We’ll send out a team to check ASAP, we completely agree about the dangers of that many cats on a wildlife preserve! We’ll keep you informed of our plans. If you have any other footage your research team collected that you think might be helpful, please send it to us, anything that will help us narrow down our search area. Good – I hope it hurts, I hope it makes it clear to him that he is never welcome here, not ever, that ThunderClan will defend ourselves to the very end to keep any human out. Saltstar’s been ordering us to avoid them, but today they came so close to the camp, he had no other choice… The human is trying to shake me off but I bite harder. He howls again, and then even more loudly when Cricketwing claws up his back. I can hear the woman crying out too, distressed; the other warriors got to her first, and Mouse-ear is clinging to her face, scratching and biting whatever he can. I swing myself up to try and sink my claws into his arm, too, but he’s turning now, he’s blundering away, even with all of us hanging on to him, and I can hear Saltstar shouting for us to let go, to chase them out, to make sure they’re gone. I release my grip and kick away – making sure bite one last time, as hard as I can – and the others do the same, until together, snarling and hissing, we chase the intruders off of our land. We’re triumphant when we return, jubilant at our victory. Our training these past few years has paid off. Surely, now, this is the end. Surely, now, we will be left alone. Glad you were able to get in to the hospital… those bites look scary! How’s Naomi holding up? Rabies shots are no joke! I totally agree we have to intervene… if you’re estimating over 50 cats, it sounds like maybe we’re dealing with a couple of colonies here. Yikes. Can’t even begin to imagine the damage they’ve caused the local wildlife and environment. Scary! Poor birdies. We can talk more on Monday, but we’ll definitely need to organize something more aggressive than a basic TNR… I’ll have a chat with Kristi for ideas, but right now I’m thinking a trap, neuter, re-location program… maybe we won’t be able to find all these strays their Forever Homes but it’s better than leaving them out in the wild. What a hard life! Poor kitties. Wishing you a good recovery this weekend, Paloma Co-Owner with Kristi M. Stray Cat Society “No cat left behind!” [attr="class","twfpth1"]SAGEGROUSE'S WITNESS [attr="class","twfptsmtxt"]The humans are catching us. I saw it happen with my own eyes, yesterday, from across the gorge. A RiverClan patrol, hunting, I think. By the time I saw the humans approaching them it was too late. I was too far away. My voice wasn’t strong enough. The humans burst out at them, tried to corner the patrol against the gorge. Most of them got away. But there was a little one, it must have been a new apprentice, I didn’t recognize her, and – it must have been her mentor. A new warrior, she must have been. They both looked so young. The apprentice ran into some bushes and – and I didn’t see what happened, but there was a horrible noise, a great clang, and then the humans were lifting up this huge, metal cage, silver and awful, and inside was the apprentice, and she – she was so scared, she couldn’t get out, she didn’t even try to fight, just cowered and cried and cried and cried. God! I can hear it now. Her mentor tried to get her, put up a huge fight, but another human appeared and – and she got caught too. First a net, and then they put her in another trap, and then they took them both away. God! I – I couldn’t do a thing, I wasn’t – and today, Stonepelt said he saw humans on our territory, moving slowly through the moor, and he said they had huge silver boxes, too, and I – is that – are we – good God. Is that what’s going to happen to all of us? [attr="class","twfpth1"]SUBJECT: [attr="class","twfpth2"]URGENT! Operation: Save a Stray, Save a Bird! [attr="class","twfptsmtxt"]From: <newsletter@straycatsociety.org> To: bcc: me Date: Monday August 30th, 2021 To our pawsitively purrfect volunteers and supporters, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Recently the Stray Cat Society has discovered several HUGE cat colonies living in the Sandhill Crane Nature Preserve. We have been asked to intervene by the Birds & Beetles Research Team at the university, who are rightly concerned about the impact our feline friends are having on the wildlife! And since we also want to rescue these kitties, well, we couldn’t sit around and do nothing! Marcus, Paloma and I have spent weeks discussing what to do. We even asked some of you for your advice! Thanks to everyone who helped us, we’re pleased to announce our new (and most ambitious) initiative yet to help rescue our furry forest friends: Operation: SAVE A STRAY, SAVE A BIRD! It will be a 2-YEAR PROGRAM to Trap, Neuter, and Re-Locate (because of course, we can’t Release!) as many of these stray cats as possible. From 2022 to 2023, we will organize small volunteer teams each Spring and Fall to go out into the preserve and trap as many strays as we can. Marcus has already taken a small group out this fall to start, and they've already rescued five cats! The Stray Cat Society will arrange re-location FOR EVERY CAT RESCUED! Like our motto says, “No cat left behind!” Of course, to make this ambitious project work, we need YOUR support! As you know, we only use HUMANE CAPTURE METHODS and always make sure that any stray kitties we rescue are treated in the BEST possible way, including hiring the best vet in the city to handle their check-ups and surgeries. Since Stray Cat Society is a non-profit run by passionate, hard-working volunteers just like yourself, we hope that you’ll be able to offer a small donation to help us fund this huge, life-saving initiative. Although we can’t offer a formal salary, we WILL pay for meals, transportation, and equipment for ALL our volunteer teams. We are also interested in anybody who can help us with re-location, whether that means you’re available to foster, come in to help socialize the cats/clean the shelter, or help transport our kitties to other shelters. This is a BIG undertaking, but we know it’ll be worth it all to find these precious kitties their FOREVER HOMES and protect our wild birds! Save a stray, save a bird! Love from, Kristi, Paloma, and Marcus Stray Cat Society “No cat left behind!” [attr="class","twfptcontent"] [attr="class","twfpth1"]EXPLANATION "Save a Stray, Save a Bird" is a setting-based event that runs from the start of 2022 to the end of 2023. During this event, the forest Clans are being targeted by a trap, neuter, and re-locate program run by the Stray Cat Society, who - along with the biology department at the local university - are taking action in order to help protect the nature preserve's wildlife communities. Though operated with only the best of good intentions, the program proves absolutely devastating for the Clans over its 2.5-year span. There will be no official RP event threads for this event. Instead, it serves as the overall "atmosphere"/background plot for the site. Every cat should be affected in some way or another, but thread-wise, you can choose how much you want to engage with the event. Anything from no references to major references to the event is fine. Threads that make major references are eligible to collect participation awards (see below). The actual trapping schedule follows the weather, so the Clans are given some respite. Cats can ONLY be trapped, and there are only humans on the territory, during the capture phases.
[attr="class","twfpth1"]SPECIFICS You may backdate your threads into 2022. Just be sure to make a note in your first post, otherwise we will assume that the thread is taking place right now. All thoughts of war, capture of Sunningrocks, disappearing StarClan/DarkForest, etc. has been put on hold due to this new and huge threat. However, the tension created from the previous events still exists, in that the Clans have not been able to come together and share information/trust one another to unify against the threat. For now, each Clan is operating almost individually, due to their history of bad relations and distrust. During the Capture phases of their program, the SCS teams will have two headquarters: one in the Meeting House (WC/SC border) and one directly next to the river, on the ThunderClan border. Though the SCS target all the territories, they spend a disproportionate amount of time in ThunderClan. The SCS never officially discover the Clan camps - they are too well protected - but they come very close on multiple occasions. Though the official program is 2 years, the SCS sent an "advance team" in Fall 2021 to see whether the initiative would be plausible. When they caught 5 cats right off the bat, they decided it was. Loners and rogues may also be affected by this event, if they are traveling in or around the forest. The SCS set up traps outside the Clan territories as well, so it is likely they caught a few unlucky wanderers. City cats are not affected unless they venture into the forest. Unless otherwise specified, all characters who do not return after the re-launch have been captured by the SCS. Of course, you may create, or bring back, a character who has been captured by the SCS and then escaped. It is also your choice if they have been neutered; the SCS does not have enough money to neuter all the strays they capture, hence why they are off-loading to other shelters, so it is realistic if your character was able to avoid the surgery. [attr="class","twfpth1"]REWARDS If you create a thread where you make major references (i.e. it is acknowledged in over 50% of the posts and all participants make a verbal acknowledgement as well) to this event, you may collect a reward. Post the link to your thread here. You will receive:
Additional rewards may be added as the event continues. |
